What to Give Up for Lent
What to keep and what to give up during Lent….
Well folks, it’s that time already. Lent, a period of abstenence, a time to reflect on one’s life and make some decisions in order to become a better person. In this economic downturn we must seperate the wheat from the chaff and begin again.
So without further hesitation here’s what’s going in my life’s waste disposal unit and what’s not…..yes, it’s the return of the good, the bad and the hideous…
Toyota Recalls:
1. Gordon Brown. I don’t care how you met your wife, I care that the country is skint. Tell us about that.
2. Council Tab Bill. Another increase, another year of waste by the dross which runs our local government.
3. Television programming. How about a programme which doesn’t involve voting for a crap ‘celebrity’ nobody has ever heard of before?
4. British Weather No explanation required, if you live outside of the UK you know we have awful weather. That’s why you holiday elsewhere!
5. Airports.
6. Trains
7. Led Zeppelin tribute bands…have they ever heard Robert Plant sing? I doubt it.
8. Barn Owls not turning up when I want them to.
Bugati Veron:
1. Voting labour out at the next election
2. Another year of single man’s council tax reduction!
3. Having a week off
4. Seeing my family
5. Coming home from abroad
6. Going back again!!
7. My camera.
8. The National Geographic. An institution of learning and all things pleasant.
9. Not having any hassle outside of work.
There you go, so what’s yours? Here’s some music whilst you think about it….

Miles,
Glad to hear you’re “separating the wheat from the chaff and beginning again.” Welcome to my wheat-free parallel universe. Very good choice, my friend.
Oh, that wasn’t your plan? Well, I’ve got it on paper, so you better stick with it.
Anxiously awaiting new wheat-free recipes from Chef Miles.

Miles,
Love that track…. you old smoothie you
Gluten free rice flour:
Making new friends…. there’s always room for more (size of coffee pot becoming increasingly inadequate)
This Blog… we must be two years on and it’s still fresh as a daisy
Shibori tie dye (watch out folks it’s going to be big yet again)…. I’m taking orders Miles, presumably you and your brother will want at least one sarong each?
Verde olives
Smoked British garlic bulbs (they arrived today and wow, sweet smokey pungentness)
Valentine flowers…. poetry on a stem
Stale old wheat flour:
People winning 56m on the lottery…. disgraceful amount
Colds and flu…. enough already!
Burnt pans due to over zealous boiling of fudge …. when last spotted it was a recreation of The Blob spreading rapidly … overnight in the chilled pantry and voila perfect fudge but extraordinarily expensive
The Garden…. what a drag, looks lifeless despite the snowdrops
Raymond Blanc’s new cook show because of that hugely time consuming chocolate cup and saucer dessert which no one at home will be able to make in less than a whole day and several kilos of fine quality chocolate later, otherwise I’ll be watching because I do find him entertaining
The thought that some of my friends might prefer a Bart Simpson sarong

Miles,
I see that you have given up your old blog heading. This new one is very impressive. The colour is most striking and I love the sun above the building. A great choice.

Cid,
That’s the spirit, thanks for getting it
A great list, smoked garlic is wonderful, put some through your next batch of mashed spuds and thank me later.
Garden, colds and Raymond…couldn’t agree more. Well said.
Thank you for saying that about the blog, I am very conscious of keeping things fresh, I never take my regulars for granted even if it looks like I do. Any ideas for blog posts you wish to see just let me know, keep it clean though!
thanks Cid

Miles,
The first thing I noticed when opening your blog was the new banner. Very striking, and certainly something that grabs one’s attention right off.
I have once again given up giving up things for Lent. Seems like a way to beat the system.

BTW, have you heard any part of Sade’s new album?? I haven’t yet, but will probably download from iTunes (my go-to music source). Latest downloads include kd lang’s “Recollections,” and IRM by Charlotte Gainsborough (yes, she is Serge’s daughter).

Miles,
.
I am giving up nothing at my time of life. Life has a habit of taking things away without asking
This week at Kew Gardens:
Wootton Bassett - a town and people endlessly turning out to honour the return of the fallen;
Family Gatherings - always a joy and appreciated;
Visiting and friends in general - we are lucky to have them and indeed to meet new ones;
Longer daytime hours - we should be in line with continental hours;
Snowdrops and crocusses emerging - harbingers of spring
At the rubbish tip:
Politics - a lot of rhetoric that shows no evidence of planning and addressing real issues;
Economic downturn - having to pay for the greed of others
Winter - frost should have killed enough bugs by now
