What is Good to Eat in February
A seasonal guide to growing and eating in February
I usually find February annoying, winter is dragging its feet with unsettled weather, sharp frosts and those dark afternoons are still around. From a cooks point of view we have to wait another month or so before the wild larder opens its doors to let us in. I love the glut of interesting food to be had in March and April, it’s a breath of fresh air after the torment that is February.
The kitchen garden kicks into life this month but it all takes place indoors, chillies are first on the agenda and I’ve got two electric propagators rearing to go. I may concentrate on those and not bother with aubergines and the like, I’ll grow a couple of varieties of tomatoes, a plum tomato for bottling and a cherry for salads with plenty of Italian basil planted around them.
The onions, shallots and garlic which went in at the start of the year will (I hope) be showing signs of promise and winter lettuce is still doing well as I write.

There isn’t much else to say on the fruit and vegetable front, look further afield for inspiration, if you’re reading this from afar then don’t look to England for inspiration-you wont get any!
Blood oranges are at their peak around now so make the most of their taste and fabulous colour. Try a few segments and a squeeze of their juice on this months pancakes.

Miles,
I managed to nip out during my lunch hour today to buy some seville oranges for the annual marmalade making. Nearly didn’t do it but thought to myself why not, it’s definitely preferable to paperwork and housework and digging in the freezing wind and hacking down bits of fallen tree and standing about looking glamorous but not doing anything….. the list goes on
