The New Canon EOS 550D

The latest release from Canon…

The boys and girls at Canon are showing no signs of letting up with the release of another dslr in April, the EOS 550D. Aimed at the entry level/enthusiast market it shows some improvements on earlier models such as the 450D and the 500D but will it be enough for these camera owners to upgrade? Here’s the spec:

18 MP APS-C CMOS sensor
DIGIC 4
ISO 100-6400, H:12800
3.7fps shooting
Full HD movies
7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD with 1,040k dots
iFCL metering
Quick Control screen
Ext. Mic socket
Movie crop

So at first glance, more pixels, a brighter LCD screen and video capability which seems standard in any new model now. Canon are covering every base from the cheapest point and shoot to the $5,000 plus pro model with a series of cameras that all offer something a little different from the next but hold back from the other. Many of these entry level cameras make for little more than a headache when it comes to choosing what is best for you. Will this new model be funamentally better than the original 450D? No, not really. Will you be able to see a real diference in picture quality? I doubt it. Why? because if you are buying a camera in this range the chances are that you won’t be viewing it on a $1500 computer screen or be too bothered about white balance and ISO settings.

Personally speaking a camera with a $200 dollar price difference from the next isn’t going to offer a huge amount more than a gloss over of what you already have.
The EOS 550D will be released in April 2010.

    Miles,
very interesting, hadn’t heard of this coming out.
I’m not reaching for my cheque book but it’s getting ever more difficult to make a choice I think.
Why not spend a bit extra and get a 7D
If you’re going to do that why not spend a bit more and get a 5D

Too many steps and not enough difference. All I would say is the addition of video and the pixel count will probably mean the phasing out of the 450
    Cheers

    Rod,
It would be a shame if they delisted the 450D, it’s one thing having all of these choices but I think it can have the reverse effect in that when somebody makes a choice (finally) they will have nagging doubts as to ‘if only I’d spent another £200′. Where do you stop with it?
