The Chocolate Habanero Chilli

Growing habanero chillies

Well the time has arrived for me to face the music. Regulars to this blog will know that I have been growing some very hot chillies in my greenhouse here in England since February. I am not a big fan of very hot chillies, I prefer those with a bite but have flavour to go with it. These chillies have been grown for experimental purposes, I have been recording their progress in photographic form as well as here on the blog and the main idea was to see how hot a chilli I could grow in an English climate.

The chocolate habanero isn’t the hottest chilli in the world but it is seriously hot. So much so that suppliers have to issue warnings about their heat levels and advise you to keep them well away from children (no problem for me!) The habanero has, until recently been considered the ‘daddy’ of hot chillies. It is used in the searingly hot chilli sauces of the West Indies and Mexico and trust me, a little goes a long way. Depending on what you read they register between 200,000 to 450,000 scoville units, but to be honest, once you get past 200,000 units does it really matter anymore? They are also known as ‘Congo Black’ and are a beautiful looking fruit, I love the way habanero fruits change their colours and this one alongside the orange is my favourite.

I am yet to try the chocolate habanero, I shall do so at the weekend. It won’t be pleasant but a man, as they say has got to do what a man has to do. I’m not sure that was written for chilli eaters but it seems quite appropriate.

    Miles,

I nibbled a boring red chilli the other day, the tiniest amount….. didn’t taste of much and no heat….. it was only after a few minutes that the heat came through. Very odd I thought. Lucky for me it only registered 1 on the scale :)

It’s obvious to me that after the big bang when the universe was created, chillies were the last things to pop out and so retained their primeval heat :)

    Cid,
‘Primeavel heat’ more like ‘prime evil’ by the looks of them :)

    Miles,

I watched with interest the documentaries on various theories about how the universe was made. Next week Cern hosts the biggest test of all hoping to prove the Higgs (busy chefs might not get the time to dig deep into the ‘Higgs’ so feel free to ask away… my very own version will be on the simple side and very easy to digest :) ) theory beyond doubt. Gripping stuff. After the ‘big one’ they’ll probably be looking for other uses for this multi billion pound machine….. I suggest we pop one of your famous chillies in and see what happens :)

p.s. if you understand more than I do, then can I ask you a few questions? We neither of us want to get caught out by your brother and his probing mind, as the string theory will very likely be the topic of lightweight conversation during the Collins Sunday lunch :)

    Cid,
I’ve heard about this, if I understand correctly there are a number of scientists opposed to it, mainly because it could result in a large black hole which will engulf the Earth. If I’m wide of the mark then blame Sky News!

    Miles,
What possess a man “to do what he has to do”? I can imagine some situations. However, to bite into hell fire is something else. Don’t bite your tongue :( Hope you will not be lost for words afterwards!

    Elsie,
Men, as a rule are beyond explaining, as I’m sure the ladies would agree :)

    Elsie,

My peaceful solution to this would be to make a sauce with the evil chilli which would be the perfect guide to strength and flavour.

Understanding the macho exploits of the male is a full time degree course and we could fail at any time apparently :)

    Miles & Cid,
I am sure that Men would say the same about women and quite rightly so :)
