The Art Deco House
iPhone diary loves the style…
Why oh why don’t we make houses like this anymore? Look at the graceful lines and curves, the elegant steps and windows, even in a state of mild disrepair it looks fabulous.
I know next to nothing of art deco, I like and appreciate the style but that’s about it. But this photograph illustrates one of the real benefits of doing this diary, it’s made me look more closely at my surroundings. I would, in all honesty probably walked past this before but I have had to train my eyes and senses to look at what is around me and this is the perfect example of what can be and is missed.

A wonderful building and as you say, why not make more like this.
The argument, as always, will be money but what I’d say is that the vast majority of cost involved in building a house is fixed and unavoidable.
Adding some style in interest would only increase costs by a small percentage.
We would then be leaving something for future generations to look at and appreciate.

I love Art deco things and also Art Nouveau as epitomised by Rennie MacKintosh. ( I am the proud owner of a set of art deco drinking glasses that belonged to my grand aunt Mary in the ’20s. )
Great photo and gorgeous house with style .

I really like it, funny how this style seems more common in the Grimsby area than where I am.

More survived in Lincoln, that could be the reason.
This house looks to me to almost a precursor to the 20s and 30s period, especially in the sweep of the staircase, and the rounded bay windows.
I’d guess this was Georgian date wise but really does have a transitional feel to it, if it was rendered white and painted it would look to be from whole new period - a wonderful building and well ahead of its time I’d say

Spot on Rod.That was exactly my feel about the place. Whatever date it is, it is a masterpiece .
I hope it has retained period features inside .
