Russian Roulette for Tea

Dinner with a difference….

Some of you may recall a recent post on eating Padron chillies in the style of the laid-back Spanish. Well, I recalled it whilst making my daily inspection of my polytunnel dedicated to chilli growing.

Chillies grow at odd rates, one day there will be one bright red fruit and that’s it, another day there will be ten. I managed to pick enough large green fruit to make a decent sized tapas and fifteen minutes later they were washed and in a frying pan. This style of eating is best suited to the outdoors along with a glass of something chilled, unless you’re going back to work and have to watch everyone else drink instead :(

I enjoy eating in the garden, I relax more and food takes on more meaning. I pan-fried the chillies in some olive oil until they began to blister, as soon as they had softened I drained them and sprinkled rock salt liberally over the scorched green skin. Fresh lime juice was on hand to give everything a little lift, perfect.

Do you remember me telling you that Padron chillies have a reputation for producing a ‘hottie’ in every ten or so chillies? Well, mine were more like every one in two! I have a strong suspicion that they may have cross pollinated with my naga jolokia plants because they were a lot hotter than anything I ate in a Spanish tapas bar.

I still managed to polish them all off, I looked on it as preliminary training for the ultimate battle: Miles Collins Vs Bhut Jolokia!
I’m off to chase a chicken around a garden followed by a run up some steps with fifty kids behind me chanting my name to the theme of ‘Rocky Balboa’ but, unlike the film I reckon I’ll loose!!

looks great and sounds idyllic as well.
At least it makes my previous comment on one of your chilli posts seem less daft

Question is, how on earth do you know how much to put in a dish ?

Just off to harvest a courgette for my breakfast !

    Rod,
I must confess I had a bit of a ’sweat on’ which isn’t ideal before going back to the heat of a kitchen.
Still got about another 80-90 growing!

    Miles,

If you notice any special effects that might be useful in my new cosmetics other than sweating buckets or natural enemas, then let me know :)

Is one born with the ability to scoff whole hot chillies or is it years of gradual training …. as a young child I used to pinch them off next doors tree, trouble is I can’t remember whether I liked them or not. These days I’m partial to the flavour but not so much the heat.

    Cid,
There is a post on ‘You Tube’ of a guy from Nottingham eating a whole Jolokia chilli!! I would post it but as you might imagine there are some moments of colourful language. Now that’s a man for you, well, not for you personally you understand as Mr Cid might object but you know what I mean etc etc… :)

    Miles,

Ahhh so it’s a manliness test is it…. I should have known….. s’pose it carries a high tariff? Well now you’ve mentioned it, I shall have to take a look at Mr Hotlips and make my own mind up :) I shall report back if and when I find this individual and of course, give you my thoughts on his overall appeal to the average female, a dodgy number in itself since I know very little about average females :)

    Miles,

I just witnessed several ‘men’ eating a jolokia chilli….. one likened it to giving birth, the rest cried and one guy’s face looked like he’d been given a chemical peel!

Who knows how their livers cope or anything else for that matter. Only a mad, cast iron intestinal man would try this and ladies I can assure you none of them looked as hot as Daniel Craig despite the smoke coming out of their ears :)

    Cid,
I never said it was pretty! Reckon DC might struggle with one of these though :)
