Potting On

It’s chilli time….

The kitchen garden has taken a battering over the weekend with strong winds and driving rain wreaking havoc on my smallest polytunnel, it’s had it. I had hoped to sort it out but persistent rain and mild exhaustion put me off.

All was not lost horticulturaly, twenty chilli seedlings were ready for potting on and then there was chard and four varieties of summer squash to see to.

Some chillies are doing better than others; pusa jwala, naga jolokia and fresno are growing nicely, the bih jolokia and orange habanero are doing well but a week or so from potting on. The infamous bhut jolokia is coming on slowly but strong.

I’ve potted them on in 10cm pots which I filled with a mixture of good compost and vermiculite, watered then put into electric propogators to warm the soil before transplanting the seedlings. The last thing they need is a shock!

Aside from the chillies all of the borlottis have come through as have the charantaise melon and a couple of pots of Asian basil. So far so good! Next on the list will be my first sowing of brilliantly coloured chard and perpetual spinach but with more bad weather on the way I may have to rethink that one.

    Miles,
Good job your chillies were not in that polytunnel. Still a stroke of luck on a misfortunate occurrance.

    Miles,

Makes you wonder how resilient a glass greenhouse might be under these weather conditions. If it makes you feel any better my new found cousins in Canada are currently experiencing a blizzard. When I meet them in April… to make them feel at home I thought I would dress in my longest, hoodiest, fur (faux of course) coat with a toy husky under one arm :) since I can’t find a bowler hat. One way or another they’ll not be forgetting their Lincolnshire kin :)
