New UFO Sighting
The band, I mean!
Dave, from the US is one of this blog’s best commentator’s and we both share a love of good food and music, something he mentioned in an earlier post got me thinking about how much music we miss out on because of where we live and that seems a real shame. I shall be writing a post, mostly for Dave’s benefit on Chris Rea because I think had he benefited from better publicity he would have been a real hit in America where they appreciate singer/songwriters of his ilk better than anyone. So I shall be mentioning lesser known artists from time to time in the hope that you will enjoy the music as much as I do. Here’s the first one;
UFO are one of the most underated rock bands ever to come out of the British Isles. They were at their finest in the seventies with guitarist Michael Schenker and produced some classic albums with a mix of rock and ballads. I was fortunate enough to see them play to a 120,000 at Knebworth Park in 1985 when they supported Deep Purple and the response from the crowd was quite incredible, especially when they played the classic ‘Lights Out’.
This is a band that embraced the hedonistic lifestyle of rock n roll to the max, they made then lost a lot of money and still tour to this day. It’s a shame they never received the recognition they deserved but thankfully their albums are now being reissued with three set for re release shortly…
‘No Place to Run’, ‘The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent’ and ‘Mechanix’ all contain bonus live tracks and are worth spending a few quid/dollars on. Here’s one of their slower songs…

This is ridiculous !
It just came here and what’s playing in the background ?
The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent !!!
I cannot go on about separate tracks as it’ll take too long.
The early stuff is classic - no question but then so is much of the later stuff
The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent is beyond awesome !
Also Dreaming from Mechanix is one of the best tracks they’ve done
Monster !!!!!!
I thought this post was going to be about that pilot who was told to shoot a UFO down - however ….
Maximum points brother !

Wow, thanks for the nice words. Yet another band I have never heard of. I’ll be spending some time on Itunes tonight looking these guys up. I love learning about bands that were previously unknown to me - having a whole catalog of music to experience and enjoy while not waiting miserably for the next album to come out. It’s like finding a new favorite author with 30 books under their belt - better than a pot of gold to me.

Dave,
Think you need to return the favour if you don’t mind. Things are pretty stale over here and I could do with something different to listen to. The ball, sir, is in your court!!

Rod,
This can’t go on! It’s too spooky for my liking-reading each other’s minds could prove dangerous!

So this was a quick Southern Rock primer. The best stuff from the Allmans was usually 20 -30 minute jams or having fun in concert (playing Whipping Post acoustic - the drummers rolling out 2 huge bass drums and pounding the crap out of them). I left out some stuff I hate(Lynard Skynard - ugh) and some stuff you have probably heard (CCR, The Band). Give me a day and I’ll post all the bands these guys influenced - REM (back when they were good), Corrosion of Conformity, Blind Melon. I can’t wait to get into the 80s and 90s now!

Dave,
Wow! Wasn’t expecting that!! Look forward to going through those tonight. Did Duane Allman join Skynard or am I getting mixed up? Thanks for taking time out to do this Dave, I really appreciate it.
Happy listening Folks!
