How to Deal with a Bully

Follow nature’s example…..

One way or another it’s been a bloody hard month and to be honest I’m ready for a break. The thing I’ve missed the most is the fresh air, that feeling of a lungfull of goodness only a bracing walk can supply. Morning ventures into the surrounding countryside have been in short supply, it’s been air con on the motorway or extract filters in a kitchen and it really isn’t the same.

What makes it harder is the fact that the hotels I oversee are situated in the most picturesque of places and that really is frustrating. The longer summer days cannot come around quick enough for me, I love early evening strolls through the woodlands observing nature at its busiest.

You can learn a lot from watching nature go about its daily business. I dropped by my local nature reserve at Fiskerton Fen to see what had dropped by on the reservoir. There is an observation hut on the bank where the bitter winter winds stab at you and take your breath away. How these birds swim in that water is beyond me, feathers or not, I don’t care. It’s freezing! The odd rock offers some respite from the water and these vantage points are often the subject of fearsome competition….

Seemingly oblivious this little felllow soon gets a rude awakening…..

Bullied off to find another place of rest the rock is now the property of this blighter, in a tough world it’s survival of the fittest and a bully is a bully. But for every big strong bully there is always someone or something stronger, something to put the bullies in their place. I watched and photographed as this feathered guardian angel rose out of the water, wings outstretched to show the scoundral who the Daddy was….

Now get lost!! Despite the fading light on a winter’s day you get the idea, I love to see a bully getting a taste of their own medicine!

    Miles,

In this troubled world it’s nice to know that any bird with you would be safe from bullies :)

How are things? My work place is hectic today and it’s unnervingly quiet at home which probably means I’ve forgotten something! Everyone I’ve spoken to seem anything but festive which is odd…. you always get one decked out in tinsel reeking of sherry, still the week is young and the staff luncheon is tomorrow…

    Rod,
Thanks, I need to have a look at ways to highlight these photos better because much of the the quality is lost when they are converted to the blog.

Miles, I don’t know whether this would work… but maybe if you uploaded the pix to a site like imageshack.us then added a link to your blog… I’m not sure whether one could hotlink to this blog. If you could, that may provide a solution.

    Miles,
Mr. Nean is thinking that your big last bird is a cormorant.
Well spotted and caught on camera. We have a bossy blackbird in the garden that beats the retreat when the starlings swoop down!
