Happy New Year
Welcome to 2008
Happy New Year everyone, hope you enjoyed the celebrations and are not suffering as a result. If you are then perhaps a hair of the dog might bring you around.
Being the kind and caring sort I have given all of my chefs (bar one) the morning off to recover and cooked eighty breakfasts myself, thankfully this is only once a year. Breakfast shift-been there, done that.
I for one shall begin the New Year as I left the old one, battling the forces of manflu! Further to yesterdays post on retro food I am currently reading Len Deighton’s excellent book, Ou Est Le Garlic from 1965, a collection of articles on French cookery which he wrote for the Observer newspaper. It is interesting to see how an English author of some of the greatest spy novels (and factual accounts of the Second World War) had immersed himself so fully into French cuisine and how much of what he wrote in the early sixties still stands up today.
Anyway, Happy New Year, thanks again for visiting the site and best wishes for 2008.

Happy New Year and all that guff !

Miles,
Happy New Year to you and everyone. Giving your staff time off and standing in whilst suffering from dreadful manflu is true grit.
I was unaware of the fact that Len Deighton also wrote about food. It would never have occured to me and thank you for enlightening me already on the first day of the New Year.
Speedy recovery

Miles,
What did they have for breakfast? Eighty of anything sounds like a nightmare to me unless it was cornflakes!

p.s. don’t worry about this manflu, think of it as a great cleanser of the system in readiness for a wonderful year ahead…

Cid,
Full English!! They were all a bit slow in coming down for breakfast though, can’t think why!
I am thinking positively about the New Year, really looking forward to it actually.
