Gym Photography

Taking photos of bodybuilders..

It’s been good to get back to using my main cameras again lately. As much as I enjoyed the iPhone project it’s not the same as using the big gear. Yesterday I spent a very enjoyable morning at a new gym in a nearby town meeting and photographing one of the counties leading bodybuilders.
Gym photography isn’t easy, there are quite literally a number of objects to get in the way; machines, people, items of clothing etc. You have to work your way around it. You can’t hang around either, these guys are training and lifting heavy weights, they’re not going to wait whilst you compose something artistic. But when you’ve got some good shots the feedback is brilliant, it’s a great form of photography and something I can see myself doing for quite some time yet.

Many bodybuilders get a bad rap, some of it deserved but in my experience the vast majority are exceptionally nice people and the guy below is no exception to that. He’s worked very hard to get a Mr Britain title and on top of that is a devoted husband and father.

Never judge a book etc etc…

    Mornin’ Miles ,

There was one the dads at a school where I taught, who owned a body building place. He was the gentlest soul you could wish to meet and so tender with his wife and two little girls.

One week I was really stressed out and one morning he popped his head round the classroom door and shouted ‘ AY our ( child’s name ), give this to Miss. ‘

It was a pretty aromatherapy lavendar candle and scented foot soak! Not the sort of gift I would have expected him to give me, just from looking at him. But so much thought had gone into that gift and…he was sensitive enough to notice that I wasn’t my ususal self.

As you say, never judge a book……. ( He was an Ugly devil …but what the heck …… )
