Growing Cauliflowers

How to Grow Cauliflowers….or not!

Earlier in the year I had high hopes for my newly planted cauliflowers, the young plants were strong, the ground suitably prepared and the watering and general nursing exemplary (though I say it myself)

Tragically all of this effort was in vain, whatever devoured my broccoli got stuck into the cauliflowers too. A lesser man would have cried but not I, no sir. I did what any self respecting man would do in this situation and gave up. Life, I told myself was too short to bugger about watering a cauliflower with no hope of survival. Besides, the red and savoy cabbages alongside were growing so well I forgot all about them.

After a period of substantial rain I ventured out into the kitchen garden for a ground inspection. The early evening sun shone and all was well. I gloated over my chard, cabbages, squashes, broad beans, parsnips, sprouts, onions, shallots, chillies, melons, herbs, potatoes, salad leaves and pumpkins and congratulated myself (nobody else would, even when I asked!) Then, out of the corner of my eye I spotted this little beauty, something else I’d forgotten about…

Cauliflower

Now obviously it isn’t the biggest cauliflower you’ve ever seen but that is a deliberate ploy on my part. Being single there isn’t the need for a large cauliflower in my house so I deliberately grew it smaller as per my Prime Minister’s> wishes

    well played sir !
I ducked out of the cauliflower growing because I feared much the same result.

Pleased you got one though, I still envy you all the space you have !
Working within the confines of my garden is nice and convenient but when you come to thin leeks out grown from seed and find you have about 50 strong plants …
    Cheers

    Rod,
Thanks, they’re not the easiest vegetable to grow well unlike leeks. But then, as you say, what do you do when you’ve got carried away?!
All I can suggest is a big pot of vichysoisse

    Cid,
Patience is a virtue, the ones I am getting for work are too tart at the moment-hopefully next week.
