Leigh,
Welcome to the site. The best way to test them is to press them in the middle. If you can feel a little 'give' then they are ripe. The bullets need to rest in a sunny spot, they will ripen in time I am sure.

How do I know when my cantaloupe melons are ready to pick. Right now I have one big one, a small one and several "bullets." This is the first time I've grown anything to eat other than tomatoes and herbs. Thanks for your help.

Danielle,
Welcome to the site and thanks for the question. I grew mine on a trellis to allow the vines to spread and the tendrills some much needed support. The key is to go for quality over quantity. Grow two or three good ones and keep them well fed.
Good luck!

Peter,
Welcome to the site, glad you came across us. Hopefully the sunshine will last for the melons, they sound as though they are doing very well.
When picked straight from the vine I can think of nothing better.
Good luck with them.
kind regards

Great site Miles. I think you and I have similar ideas on what blogging is about.

My first crop of melons are now vigorous, three-inch tall plants in my greenhouse. Your post came up NO. 1 on Google for "growing canteloupe melons"!!

Cid,
Melon and ginger, now that takes me back! Fan of melon with some port poured over it and liberally dusted with some ten year old ground ginger. Those were the days!!

Rod,
Thanks for that, they do need quite a bit of heat so under glass would be the way to go.

Miles,

Melon and ginger jam is one of my old favourites... here we go again with the preserves! It works well if the fruit has a strong 'musky' sweet flavour.

Strangely enough I get compliments from time to time on the same subject..... people must have long memories since I haven't grown them for quite some years :)
