Difference in Sensor Size Between Canon EOS 5Dmk2 and 7D

The difference between a crop sensor on a 7D and a full frame on a 5D/5D Mark Two…

For anyone who cannot decide on whether to buy a camera with a cropped sensor or one with a full frame then take a look at this video courtesy of Mike Collins (no relation) who has shown the difference between the two cameras using the same lens on each.

It’s interesting to see the quite remarkable difference in the field of view and how it affects the 7D and other cropped sensors. At the end of the day there are good and bad points for both and ultimately it comes down to the style of photography you shoot as the 7D/cropped sensor will make your lenses more telephoto. My advice would be to get one of each!

So thanks to Mike Collins for sharing this video and for showing how a cropped sensor’s field of view differs from a full frame….

    Miles,
it’s a great video, the difference is greater than I’d imagined - it certainly shows now why I couldn’t get on with your 24-105 !

Personally I’m not fussed about width as I can get all I need using a 10-20mm lens - it’s the quality when doing landscapes
    Great idea
    Many thanks

    Miles,
I try to put FF ideas to the back of my mind - especially ones like a used 1Ds MKII

    Get one of each! Classic!

I can’t wait to get a full frame camera, I do like a wide lens and you have to spend a small fortune to get a good one for a crop senson camera.

A bit off topic, sorry but didn’t know where else to ask the question. My monitor calibrator has stopped working (Pantone Huey) and I have a load of photos that need some work before creating a photobook.

What do you (Miles or others!) guys use? I find colour management infinitly frustrating and wasn’t very satisfied with the results from my Huey.

    Sam,
Not sure what to suggest there to be honest mate, I use a large HP monitor and have never had any problems with it. Hopefully someone will read this and be able to help.
Can’t go wrong with full frame btw!

After much consideration (and I believe, wonderful restraint!) I have decided to put my full frame sensor dreams on hold for a while and invest in some new glass.

I’ve been dying to get my hands on some “L” glass for years and while camera bodies will come and go, a decent lens should stay with you for life.

So after selling as much unwanted stuff that I could find (and begging for some birthday monies!), I have decided to bu the Canon 24 - 70mm F2.8 L.

My 40D should do the lens justice and I think my photography will improve more from a glass than a housing upgrade.

Anyway, I know it’s not strictly related to this post but I’m so excited I just had to post it. As a challenge (and justification) I have promised myself I will cover the cost of the lens by earning some money with it!

    Sam,
Good for you, it’s a great lens. I’ve got the 24-105 and it’s brilliant, I’d never change it. I’ve had great results from it with the 5D mark 2 and the cropped sensor on the 1D mark 1V so no worries there. It’s a great range for a zoom, I use it for food and portraits mostly.
Have fun, glad you wanted to share it with us..nothing wrong with being excited with a new piece of kit :)

    Cheers

    Thanks Miles.

I did consider that one but I think I prefer the faster lens (even without IS) as I often seem to be shooting in low light and want that shutter speed.
