Chilli Seedlings

The next stage…..

About eighty five percent of the chilli seeds I have sown have now come through, as I write I have six out of the nine bhut jolokia now showing, eight of the naga jolokia, five orange habanero, nine of the maules, six pusa jwala, four padron, five fresno, two bih jolokia and only one chocolate habanero.

Incredibly, the only disaster has been my surefire cayenne’s, not one! The seedlings are enjoying the sunlight by day before being moved to warmer places in the house during the night, despite the double glazing a window ledge can be a chilly place for a heat loving chilli.

My special chilli feed is ready and waiting to be deployed, I shall see how many plants I end up with before planting too much else, I am trying to be sensible this year and don’t want it to become a chore. But then I always say that!

    Miles,

Look at that little heat reactor, bless it who would guess it’s true calling :) Speaking of which is any other part of the plant edible and would it be hot?

No it’s just the fruit that you eat-that’s enough!!

    Hey Miles,
If you can grab a lamp with a full-spectrum light, you might want to buy one - that pepper is looking leggy, and I bet the reason is it is not getting 14-16 hours of sunlight, which is optimal for chilis when they’re still young and impressionable.
Trust me on this one: 10-12 hours of sunlight isn’t really enough.

    Hank,
I was thinking about a lamp a couple of days ago, the problem we have is that we have to sow in February to accomodate their long growing season but there isn’t enough sunlight, I’ll have a look into it.
    Thanks Hank

    Miles,

Norway has a seed ark and apparently there are others. Should we declare your polytunnel an ark? So then if everything swans off down the Witham, we’ll have your chillies to survive on… what a relief, for a minute there I thought we were in trouble :)

    Cid,
It feels like Scandanavia here at the moment with the lack of light (and when I forget to put the heating on!)
Fear not, I shall dispense a jar of freshly dried beauties in due course.
