Anarchy in the UK

The ‘Anarchy’ sign…

Back along the Brayford River in Lincoln again for this shot, just off Dixon Street and the causeway which leads into the city centre. The ‘Anarchy’ symbol, surely the starting point for any wannabe graffiti sprayer? In 1982 I plastered this all over my school books, I was fourteen and wanted to bring the government down. Actually I didn’t, I had as much understanding of the symbol as I had the Mandarin alphabet but the symbol looked good.

But back in the late seventies and early eighties this symbol was representative of the punk movement and it has managed to keep its sense of notoriety ever since.
All of that said it is nothing more than a piece of mindless vandalism spoiling an informative sign at the edge of a wonderful stretch of water.

I remember seeing this all over.
In middle age I don’t suppose I’m in favour of anarchy but I think it’s a shame the youth of today are as safe, dull and boring as those of us in middle-age !

    Rod,
Bit of a memory blast isn’t it? I think it’s a shame that so many today show so little interest in politics and their world in general. Most of our generation were naive to the reality and got most of it wrong but at least there was an interest.

Good Lord! I remember this too. I also remember a leather jacket with 22 zippers and sticking safety pins through my ears - myself . . .

As with you Collins men, I am not in favor of anarchy today, and really wasn’t in favor if it when I was pogo-ing all those years ago.

However, I think a revolutionary spirit in young people is a good thing.

Didn’t Churchill say, “If you are not a socialist by the time you are 20, you have no heart. . .”

Sadly, it seems missing in most kids, these days.

I wonder if this will have a bad impact on society in the future, given the lambs not rams out there now?

    Laura,
That surprises me- a punk academic?! Like it ;)

You make a good point, youthful ignorance paths the way (sometimes) to a more learned point of view. When I was at secondary school we were naive and largely ignorant of political reality but at least there was a point of view. A modicum of interest is surely better than nothing?
I think it may well have an impact, could well make life easier for future political parties once we’re too old to rebel :)
