Sandra,
Welcome to the site. I stopped going because whenever I went they had closed it for shooting purposes. I do believe they can do it but it's been a while since I last went. Things must have changed a bit because I thought dogs were not allowed in there? Perhaps some of the gunshot is from the adjacent fields?
Either way I no longer visit because any noise spoils it for me as a photographer so I understand what you are saying.
Kind regards

My husband and I also love this place but there is one thing I'd like to point out.
The words 'Nature Reserve' & 'quiet' do not go hand in hand with the sound of gunshot.
We do not understand why, every time (or at least 90% of the time) we choose to take a walk in this beautiful environment, the place is 'spoilt' by the sound of gunshot. Not pleasant or reassuring when you're walking a dog!
I have to admit I do not know what the regulations are regarding hunting on Nature Reserves but I'm certainly going to find out. These people are not gamekeepers or 'watch out pheasants you're facing extinction!'
Is a Nature Reserve not supposed to be a protected environment where animals are not harassed, i.e. hunted and where people who enjoy watching them alive rather than dead are supposed to be allowed to do just that?
May be I'm naive but I'm sure a lot of people would agree with me.
We are now afraid to take our dog into the woods, never mind our children! It's happening everyday; a concert of gunshot!
Why are these hunters permitted to take over Cocklode and Great West Woods?
Best regards,
Sandra

Miles,
This looks a lovely wood to walk in and what great history to discover around it.
I have made a note of it for future reference.
