A Review of Beyond the Great Wall by Jeffrey Alford & Naomi Duguid
It’s out now, go and buy it!
I’ve been waiting for this book for months, Alford and Duguid are two of my all time favourite authors, their writings and photographs depicting years of travel throughout Asia has been a source of inspiration for me for a number of years.
Beyond the Great Wall is the third book in the series of food and travel in Asia which began with Hot, Sour, Salty, Sweet which is my favourite book on South East Asian food followed by the equally impressive Mangoes and Curry Leaves, a tour de force of a book about the Indian Subcontinent.
This book follows the same format; inspiring and touching tales from their earliest days of travelling through China coupled with stunning photography and original recipes from the many different tribespeople who live beyond the modern cities.
The recipes spark the imagination, they are easy to follow and offer alternative choices as well as handy tips with each section broken down into, among others; noodles and dumplings, condiments and seasonings, soups, salads, breads, chicken and eggs, drinks, meat, fish and vegetarian.
I would reccomend any of their books, this is set to join the others as a modern classic and will surely win as many awards as the previous ones did.
